This week I am inspired by the bittersweet legacy of George Michael.
I’ve been a huge George Michael fan for decades – I’ve listened to his music on vinyl, cassettes, CDs and now digitally.. He wrote and produced most of his music himself, and I can certainly feel how much of his spirit he put into his songs. I love the way he owned his emotions, and how he sang heart-wrenching ballads with the same enthusiasm he belted out upbeat pop anthems.
I don’t think it’s possible to pick just one favorite song. “Everything She Wants”, “Careless Whisper” and “Freedom” areamong the tracks I listen to most often. I’ll also admit to making countless ill-fated attempts at hitting that legendary high note in “One More Try” (I don’t want to learn to hold you, touch yoooooo-OOOOOOOUUU – uuuuuuuu)…you know the high note I am referring to.
I’m still in shock; the fact that he’s gone hasn’t fully sunk in yet. Despite the sadness, there is comfort in knowing that his heart and soul lives on in his music.
“Gotta have some faith in the sound
It’s the one good thing that I’ve got
I won’t let you down
So please don’t give me up
‘Cause I would really, really love to stick around, oh yeah”
